See, if you are a Muslim, you are aware of all your festivals. But if you are a non-muslim like me, I would love to share a few things about Muslim festivals celebrated worldwide. Well, the most famous festival celebrated by Muslims and known to many is Ramadan.
But in today's article, we are not going to talk about Ramadan, but Eid or Eid ul-Fitr. Yes, did you just pronounce it? Kudos! You have read something in Arabic. Now coming to the point, first I would like to tell you that there are two different Eid festivals that are celebrated in a year. One is Eid-ul-Fitr, and the other one is Eid ul-Adha. The point to be noted here is both the festivals are celebrated for different reasons.
Eid ul-Fitr is a three-day celebration that is done at the end of the holy month of Ramadan, whereas Eid ul-Adha is celebrated at the annual Hajj pilgrimage on the tenth day of the 12th month Dhu al-Hijjah.
As already said, we are going to talk about Eid ul-Fitr in this article.
What is Eid ul-Fitr?
Eid al-Fitr, in general terms, means the festival of breaking the fast, which marks the end of Ramadan. This festival is celebrated in all Muslim countries and also by the Muslim people who dwell worldwide. In India, Eid al-Fitr starts on 12 May and ends on 3 May 2022.
So how is the start of Eid known?
Well, you must be aware that Muslims follow the moon cycle and based on it, the date is fixed. So the Eid al-Fitr starts with the sighting of the crescent moon, which occurs a day after the new moon. Muslims have to wait till the evening before Eid to confirm and verify its date.
On the off chance that the crescent moon does not appear, then the Ramadan festival would continue for one more day. This is rare, and it is calculated based on the lunar event where the Eid dates change every year on the Gregorian calendar. And the notable part is that this calculation varies from one country to another depending on the geographical location.
So mostly Muslim people would depend on the testimonies of local moon sighters, and the local religious authorities would let them know when Eid will be celebrated.
How do Muslims celebrate Eid?
Now comes the crucial part, how this festival is celebrated.
Muslims start the Eid celebrations by parting in communal post-dawn prayers, which is followed by a short sermon.
Mostly the prayers take place in mosques or in large malls but to accommodate the large crowd, in many countries, these prayers are done in open space. After the prayer is done, people hug and congratulate each other. Also, people spend that day visiting their relatives and accept sweets while moving from one house to another.
Children get dressed in new clothes, and they really love this festival as they are offered gifts and money to celebrate this blissful occasion. Finally, this festival is ended by giving alms to the poor.
In Muslim countries, you can find the streets decorated with flowers and festive lights and also holds carnivals to remember the end of the holy month. Also, traditional sweets are prepared before Eid or in the morning of the festival.
Final words:
Now that you have read the article completely. I have a few tips for you. Do you have any plans to wish your Muslim besties on their festival? Then you can use the most famous greetings, "Eid Mubarak, which means Blessed Eid or Eid sa'id, which means Happy Eid.
Also, it is noted that the Eid greetings vary in different countries. Hope you liked this article. Give it a thumbs up if you find this article interesting.
