Harvey was concerned that marketing the symbol would reduce its impact. We can hardly blame him for his appreciation. In 1963, Harvey Ball, a graphic artist, and publisher from Worcester, Massachusetts created the smiley face symbol we all know. The popularity of this symbol exploded in the world of popular culture. In 1999, World Smile Day became a public holiday to take back control. Aspects of the day's celebration were simple but effective.
