Nelson Mandela International Day, also known as Mandela Day, is an international celebration to honor the revolutionary Nelson Mandela, and is celebrated annually on his birthday, July 18. This day was officially established by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first observance of Mandela Day on July 18, 2010.

Each year, International Nelson Mandela Day highlights the legacy of a man whose monumental achievements changed the twentieth century and shaped the twenty-first century. His values and determination, and his deep commitment to human rights, freedom and justice, are reflected and inspired by others.

Mandela advocated the legitimate dignity and equality of all neighborhoods and encouraged commitment and solidarity across all borders. His relentless pursuit of equality went hand in hand with his founding father of peace in South Africa.

Nelson Mandela remains a symbol of strength in resisting persecution. In times of turbulence, Mandela's legacy teaches everyone to choose dignity over humiliation, speak out in situations of injustice, and forgiveness over hatred.

He once said, "Being free is not merely to let go of chains, but to live in a way that respects and promotes the freedom of others." In 2014, the United Nations General Assembly established the Nelson Mandela Prize, an award that recognizes the achievements of those who have gone above and beyond to serve humanity.
